Cooking catchup!

Pad Kra Pow
Pad Kra Pow – Thai Basil Chicken

Just a couple things I’ve cooked up lately for this post. The first is Pad Kra Pow – Thai Basil Chicken, I posted this originally back in April but had another couple go-arounds to try to get it tastier. The second being Kalbi Steak Tips, the recipe was posted using short ribs and steak tips are a great alternative for throwing on the grill now that it’s summertime!

Now, the Thai Basil Chicken had been a dish that was confounding me for quite some time. I could never get the sauce just right, no matter how hard I tried. But then, one day, eureka! I added 1.5x the sauce and cut out some of the extra vegetables. I didn’t really think about it at the time, but the extra vegetables will soak up a ton of the sauce AND dilute the sauce to boot! So, using only half an onion and half a red pepper, this edition was the closest I’ve gotten to the stuff I’ve eaten at Rod Dee, Dok Bua, and S&I To Go!

On the other hand, the Kalbi marinade I found a while back turned out to be just about right. I end up making it about once a month and absolutely devour the stuff. Lately, I’ve been applying the marinade to steak tips and bringing them to other BBQ’s, and they’ve been an absolute hit! Add that with some peppers, onions, and a little bit of cheese, and this was a pretty good meal for the summer.

JoJo Taipei – Allston

One of the great things about Allston/Brighton is that there are a ton of quaint little eateries, serving a huge variety of ethnic foods and reasonably priced, to boot! JoJo Taipei is one of them, a restaurant specializing in Taiwanese food, including soup dumplings and noodle soups.

I’ve been here a few times, most recently with a group of friends to try JoJo Taipei’s most famous dishes and some of the more “interesting” things you can eat. Definitely a fan of the stews and the soup, not so much of stinky tofu. Also, there are a bunch of special appetizers each day that don’t appear on the menu, the waitress just brings them out on a tray for you to choose from.

I’m having some serious writer’s block right now too, so I’ll cut the post short here. Next time, I won’t wait 3 months before writing about a dinner out :P

Matt Murphy’s Pub (Brookline Village)

Double-thick Pork chop

There’s bar food and then there’s bar food. Matt Murphy’s really shouldn’t be referred to as a bar…sure, it’s got a bar to lean on and serves some great cocktails, but the food is stunning! This is a quiet, dark, little place down in Brookline Village served by some of the friendliest and helpful staff around.

The first time I was here was after a particularly harsh poker session for both myself and a buddy. We decided, heck, we need something good to eat, it’s late, and we’re both annoyed. So he suggested Matt Murphy’s and having not been there yet, I figured we’d give it a shot.

I’m somewhat into beer, I like it, but I’ve never been a huge fan of stouts. But I had O’hara’s Irish stout for the first time at the pub and was instantly a fan. And to go with it, let’s get into the food! After looking through the menus that were conveniently stored in the waiter’s back pocket, I was stumped. Lots of good looking dishes to choose from and being indecisive, I couldn’t pick. So I asked our Irish waiter and without hesitation he stated “The pork chop’s the best thing on the menu.” My buddy ended up ordering it so wanting to try something else, I asked about the 2nd best thing which turned out to be the beef stew (no pictures on the stew sadly, the pictures are from a later visit). After chow and a couple more beers, I was enamored with the place and have been back several times already!

P.S. Just got back from vacation, will have a ton more pictures and stuff to show soon!

Thailand Restaurant – New Jersey

Thailand Restaurant - Pad Kee Mao

This is the 2nd of my two favorite restaurants from New Jersey. It’s been almost 10 years since I first ate there and wow, I’m sure glad they’ve stuck around (they’re still doing well, I think!). The biggest bummer was that they usually take two to three weeks of vacation in the middle of the summer (probably around the time I get to visit) and so I can’t get my Pad Kee Mao fix!

Speaking of which, their Pad Kee Mao is definitely one of the best recreations of that dish I’ve ever had. I’m not sure exactly what they do, but it ends up really flavorful and the vegetables don’t take away from the sauce, something I’ve found at some other restaurants I’ve been to. I’ve never been able to duplicate this in the kitchen though. Mainly, I can’t pan fry the noodles as well in my wok, the wok never gets hot enough to sear the noodles. But in addition, I can’t ever seem to get the sauce right (But I did get it right recently with some Pad Kra Pao – Thai basil chicken so maybe I’ll be close soon).

Anyway, I’m off on vacation for the next week and hopefully will have some more pictures to share when I get back!
